Get
Tee'd Off or Grab a Bite |
|
Everyone thinks they have to squeeze all their golfing and
all their fishing into the summer months. Along the Alabama Gulf
Coast we know better.
Those
who are in-the-know will tell you that September and October are some of the best
times to swing in a few rounds of golf or cast your line for adventure. The greens
are thriving and the fish are chomping! It's a little less crowded. A little cooler
on the fairway or on the deck of a boat. And there are great deals to be had.
You can even book your tee times online from the comfort of your mouse pad.

| Set Sail on a Shipwreck Adventure |
|
Searching the ocean floor for shipwrecks has carried
Greg Stemm around the world. Now, his search has come full circle as the local
heritage museum in his family's hometown will proudly display his company's Civil
War era find – treasures from the SS Republic®. Shipwreck!
Treasures from the SS Republic will be on display at the Baldwin County Heritage Museum in Elberta, beginning Sunday, August 31.
The discovery of the wreck, the high-tech exploration and the recovery efforts
have all garnered worldwide media attention, including an hour-long National
Geographic program. The 19-month exploration yielded more than 14,000
artifacts and 51,000 coins. As one of the most valuable shipwreck coin collections
of United States gold and silver currency ever found, these coins exceed $75 million
in retail value with the rarest coin valued more than half a million dollars.
The SS Republic was built in 1853 and was launched into commercial service
as the Tennessee. It was captured by Confederate troops in 1861,
only to be captured the following year by Union forces. As the flagship of Admiral
David Farragut, the vessel participated in the Battle of Mobile Bay (August 1864)
when Farragut issued his famous "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead"
command in the waters between Forts Morgan and Gaines
Following the war,
the Republic was sold to a private investment group and was carrying reconstruction
supplies from New York to New Orleans when it was sunk off the Georgia coast during a hurricane in 1865.
Shipwreck! Treasures from the SS Republic is on display
indefinitely Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the
second and fourth Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Exhibit admission is $12.00 for
adults, $10.00 for seniors, $8.00 for children (age 2-12) and $6.00 for school
groups of any age. Reservations are recommended. The Baldwin County Heritage Museum
is located between Mobile and Pensacola on Highway 98 in Elberta about 3.5 miles
east of the Foley Beach Express. |

Hail
to the Shrimp! |
|
Shrimp is king on Alabama's
Gulf Coast! Plan now for the year's biggest event
paying homage to the Sultan of Seafood.
Hold court with the King of Crustaceans, the Prince of Prawns,
the Duke of Delicacies. The 37th Annual National Shrimp Festival (October
9-12) pays tribute to this tasty Gulf Coast tidbit and is consistently
voted one of the best festivals in the Southeast.
Each
October, Gulf Shores Public
Beach becomes "party central"
with live entertainment, fine arts, arts and crafts, and of course, the best fresh
shrimp you'll ever have. There's fried shrimp. Boiled shrimp. Shrimp kabobs. Coconut
shrimp. Well, you get the picture.
Live music will fill the boardwalk all day, every day of
the Festival, with headliners JoDee Messina (Friday night) and Molly
Hatchet (Saturday). Bring a beach chair and look for your favorite local
act to perform while you sit down to enjoy your po-boy.
Book
your trip online right now and look for special festival hot deals. You can check out the full festival line-up at
the Shrimp Festival website. |
