What Would Your Mother Say...
If she knew that you were tapping your toe to the tunes of the 23rd Annual Frank Brown Songwriters Festival, held November 13-23? Make her proud by expanding your musical repertoire with this festival's wide selection of writers. Discover the authors of yesterday's and tomorrow's hits in the various venues along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Interestingly, this festival is dedicated to the memory of Frank Brown, the legendary night watchman of an even more famous watering hole. Brown patrolled the Flora-Bama for 28 years, finally retiring at the age of 91. Respected among the regulars, he never had to rely on this pair of matching revolvers, slung low. Instead, he only had to say "Now, you boys don't have to be like that. What would yo' mamma say?" For more information and a list of venues, click here.

Soar to New Levels with the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show

Witness the astonishing aerial maneuvers of the Blue Angels during their free Homecoming Air Show scheduled for Friday and Saturday, November 14-15 at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. As the U.S. Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels draw large crowds from the Alabama Gulf Coast, which is a short commute to the Naval Air Station.

Gates open at 8:00 a.m. each day for the 9:45 am show with the Blue Angels flying around 2:00 p.m. The homecoming show will feature static aircraft displays and virtual reality experiences in addition to souvenir and food vendors. Children will be entertained for hours with the Kid's Zone (which includes Sony Play Station II games and a bungee jump) and the craft projects in the Home Depot Kids Workshop Area. As always, the pilots will sign autographs after the show. This year, fans will also enjoy a special Friday night light show, set to kick off at 4:30 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to enter the base via the back gate off Blue Angel Parkway. Chairs are permitted but please leave the coolers, backpacks, food, drinks and pets at home. Since the tarmac can be windy and noisy, bring several layers of clothing and ear protection (for the children). Bleacher seating is available for $5.00 per seat and may be pre-purchased.

The Pensacola Naval Air Station is a quick and easy 20 minute ride from Orange Beach with two bridges and two right turns. Travel east on Highway 182, and cross over the Perdido Pass Bridge. Follow the road, and travel over the second bridge. Turn right onto Gulf Beach Highway/CR 292A, and then turn right onto Blue Angel Parkway/SR 173. For more information, click here.

SEC Women's Soccer Championship Returns to Orange Beach

Heated soccer action returns to the Alabama Gulf Coast for the fifth time in six years with the 2008 Southeastern Conference Women's Soccer Championship. Held at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, the top eight tournament seeds will square off in quarterfinal action starting on Wednesday, November 5 at noon. Winners will advance to semifinal play on Friday, November 7 with games beginning at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
