July The National Softball Association along with the Orange Beach
Sports Association hosted the Summer’s End NSA Softball Tournament in July.
Twenty-eight teams played softball at the Orange Beach Sportsplex competing to
win the title of NSA champions. The tournament generated 392 room nights for the area.
August - Thunder Thunder Thunder! Thunder on the Gulf roared into
town August 14-17, 2008. Generating more traffic for Pleasure Island businesses,
these powerboat races produced 12,312 additional room nights for local accommodations,
which resulted in almost $1.8 million in total lodging revenue. At the end of
the weekend, race fans left behind about $4.2 million in total island spending.
Dates for Thunder on the Gulf 2009 are set for August 13-16, 2009.
September
Alabama’s coastal waters were full of activity in September as two
national fishing tournaments were hosted in both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.
During this three-day span, the nation’s top kingfish and redfish anglers
battled in the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour (September 12-14) and the Gulf Division
Fishing Tournament (September 13) for the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Cabela’s,
respectively. Both events were televised and the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour will
air on Fox Sports Network, FSN nationally November 16, 2008, while the IFA Redfish
Tour will air on SPORTSOUTH in early January 2009. Both events generated over 300 room nights for the area.

Kaiser Coastal Half Marathon and 5K Run Saturday November
29, 2008 The Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, Kaiser Realty and Team
Magic partner to bring you the new Kaiser Realty Coastal Half Marathon and 5k
Run to the beautiful Alabama beaches this fall. For more information or to

SEC Soccer Women’s
Championships November 5-7, 2009 Collegiate soccer action
returns to the Alabama Gulf Coast with the 2008
Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. Held at the Orange
Beach Sportsplex, the top eight tournament teams will square off in quarterfinal
action starting on Wednesday, November 5 at noon. Winners will advance to semifinal
play on Friday, November 7. Tickets (which are available at the gate) are $5.00
for adults and $3.00 children while children in soccer uniforms or with their
coaches are admitted for no charge.

| Gulf Shores boasts new facilities |
|
Six new rubeco tennis courts and a 5,000-square-foot state-of-the-art tennis
facility with a lounge, restrooms and an observation deck recently opened in Gulf
Shores. Also new to Gulf Shores are five new softball fields at the Gulf Shores
Sportsplex, located on West County Road 6. These fields feature covered dugouts,
a press box, a concession stand, shaded pavilions and a batting cage. For more
information about the facilities available in both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach,
