SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS

July
The National Softball Association along with the Orange Beach Sports Association hosted the Summer’s End NSA Softball Tournament in July. Twenty-eight teams played softball at the Orange Beach Sportsplex competing to win the title of NSA champions. The tournament generated 392 room nights for the area.

August - Thunder Thunder Thunder!
Thunder on the Gulf roared into town August 14-17, 2008. Generating more traffic for Pleasure Island businesses, these powerboat races produced 12,312 additional room nights for local accommodations, which resulted in almost $1.8 million in total lodging revenue. At the end of the weekend, race fans left behind about $4.2 million in total island spending. Dates for Thunder on the Gulf 2009 are set for August 13-16, 2009.

September
Alabama’s coastal waters were full of activity in September as two national fishing tournaments were hosted in both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. During this three-day span, the nation’s top kingfish and redfish anglers battled in the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour (September 12-14) and the Gulf Division Fishing Tournament (September 13) for the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Cabela’s, respectively. Both events were televised and the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour will air on Fox Sports Network, FSN nationally November 16, 2008, while the IFA Redfish Tour will air on SPORTSOUTH in early January 2009. Both events generated over 300 room nights for the area.
