End of the Year Recap |
|
Softball, baseball, soccer, fishing, beach volleyball. You name it; it was hosted
along Alabama’s Gulf Coast in 2008. During the year, the area hosted over
28 events and the Sports Commission was happy to play a part in them. Thanks to
these events, over 12,000 athletes came to Alabama’s Gulf Coast and 10,000
room nights were generated, which resulted in a total tourism impact in excess of $3 million.

Kaiser
Realty Coastal ½ Marathon and 5K Run |
|
While others were recovering from too many servings of turkey and dressing,
over 300 people turned out for the first Kaiser Realty Coastal Half Marathon
and 5K Run, which was held November 29 in Orange Beach.
“I
had a great time at this marathon,” said Don Ingram. “I was impressed
with the organization of the event. The atmosphere was friendly and family oriented. This
was my first race, and the experience was great.I can't wait for next year. Keep up the good work.”
Among those taking home overall winner prizes in the half-marathon were Jay
Thomson (of Gulf Shores, AL), Michael Kohler (of Pensacola, FL) and Daniel Crandall
(of Bossier, LA), respectively. On the ladies’ side, Anna Hallex (of Gulf
Shores, AL), Holley Sweeney (of Columbiana, AL) and Lowell Ann Goodwin (of Spanish
Fort, AL) claimed the top three female overall trophies, respectively.
As
a production of Team-Magic and the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, this
event was headquartered at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, where both races began
and ended. As runners navigated the course through the Hugh Branyon Back Country
Trail and along the beachside road, family and friends waited at the Sportsplex,
playing child-hood games such as tossing Frisbee and tag or otherwise relaxing at the inviting facilities.
The 2008 Kaiser Realty Coastal Half Marathon and 5K Run was presented by the
Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, AL.com, Team-Magic and Miller Lite. This
event was also supported by the Cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, the Alabama
Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce, Alabama State Parks, Century Tel and Tacky Jack’s.
