| What a Year! |
|
The priceless moments of come-from-behind victories and agonizing losses translated
into a positive economic boost for Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Brought to Pleasure
Island by the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission (AGCSC), these 28 events in
2008 generated an additional 10,081 room nights for local accommodations and resulted
in a total tourism impact of $3,004,277.
“The growth of this niche
tourism market has had an obvious positive impact on our expanding shoulder season,”
said Herb Malone, president/CEO of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors
Bureau (CVB). “Last year was the first full year of the sports commission
functioning as a department within the CVB, and I think the results show that
this move was a great decision. Plus, our area is fortunate to have a large selection
of top-notch facilities, thanks to the Cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.”

| Nominations Propel Alabama Gulf Coast
Sports Commission to National Industry Award |

From sidelines to surf, athletics on the Alabama Gulf Coast has emerged on the
national sport industry radar as SportsEvents
Magazine recently named the Alabama
Gulf Coast Sports Commission to its annual list of readers’ choice awards.
Released in the January 2009 issue, the “50+ Planners and Places to Watch
in 2009” special feature recognizes industry professionals from around the
country who have exhibited a high level of professionalism, creativity and excellence
in hosting sporting events. Readers and other industry professionals also had

| 2009 is Off to A Great Start |
|
Currently, the 2009 calendar includes 35 events, including the return of the
Brett/Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon, SEC Women's Soccer Championship and
the Kaiser Realty Coastal 1/2 Marathon & 5k Run just to name a few.
The
Sports Commission is also excited to partner with the Mobile Bay Kayak Fishing
Association (MBKFA), for the Inaugural Inshore/Offshore Kayak Fishing Tournament.
This tournament promises to be one of the largest tournaments of its kind in the
state and attract anglers from around the Southeast, who will fish for king mackerel,
Spanish mackerel, redfish, speckled trout and flounder in the gulf waters and
back bays. Held at the Orange Beach waterfront park, this event will also feature
conservation exhibits, children’s activities and live music, all of which
is free to the public. Tournament proceeds will benefit Covenant Hospice of Mobile and Baldwin Counties.

| Opportunities For You to Get Involved |
|
The Sports Commission would not be able to host these great events in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach without the help of our
wonderful volunteers. With a full schedule this year our volunteers will be even
more valuable. The first opportunity to get in on all the action will be Valentine’s
weekend. Grab your sweetheart and volunteer your time at the 16th Annual
Gulf Coast Classic© Volleyball Tournament (February 14th or 15th)
or the Orange Beach Seafood Festival (February 14th). If you are interested
in volunteering at either of these great events please contact Sarah Hicks, 251-974-4611.
