Sea Creatures Invade the Alabama Gulf Coast!

Creatures from the deep have been spotted dragging themselves on to our beaches late at night.

Don’t worry. It’s not the Creature from the Black Lagoon. It’s nesting season for sea turtles! The Alabama Gulf Coast is lucky enough to be a nesting habitat for several types of endangered sea turtles. Female turtles make their way onto our beaches each year between the months of May and October to lay their eggs. After about 60 days the eggs will hatch, and the hatchlings begin a perilous journey back to the sea. They will eventually return to the beach where they were hatched to lay their own eggs.

When you visit, you may see nesting sites that are marked and roped off for protection. Feel free to take a look, but please don’t disturb the site. All six species of sea turtles found in U.S. waters are threatened or endangered.

Read on to learn about how you can help make our beaches a safe haven for our flippered friends and watch video of turtle hatchlings making their way to the sea.

More than Just the Beach

Worried about getting bored with the beach? Shake off the sand, throw on a pair of flip-flops and head out to enjoy some cool coastal activities.

Cool off with the kids on a lightning-fast ride down a giant water slide. Putter around a bit on one of our championship golf courses. Cast your line on a deep-sea adventure, dreaming of the one that won’t get away. Travel back in time with a visit to Fort Morgan or one of our local museums. Paddle a kayak silently through a salt marsh under the watchful eyes of herons and gators. Or shop ‘til you drop at outlet stores, antique shops or one-of-kind boutiques.

And don’t worry if you wear yourself out. You can always recover tomorrow with a siesta on a beach blanket.
