Home Opens to Public for Rare Summer Tours |
|
Constructed under majestic oaks dripping with Spanish moss, the Swift-Coles
Historic Home has stood as a lasting reminder of the county's rich legacy. Thanks
to an extensive restoration of this home and the surround grounds, guided tours
will be conducted for the summer months as guests navigate the 16 room Tidewater
Mansion to experience what life was like nearly 100 years ago along the Bon Secour
River.
Built around 1882, the 4 room structure was home to the Charles
Swift family. In 1902, they added 12 more rooms to accommodate overnight
ferry guests arriving from Mobile. Then in 1976, Nik Coles bought the home and
began the restoration efforts, which were finally completed by the Baldwin County
Department of Archives and History along with the Baldwin County Historic Development
Commission.
The restoration of the Swift-Coles Historic Home is part of
Baldwin County’s Bicentennial celebration, commemorating 200 years of the
county’s rich and diverse heritage.
Tours will be offered throughout
the summer months on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (with
the last tour beginning at 3:00 p.m.). Admission is $3.00. For more information
or to schedule a private tour, contact the county's archive and history department
at 251-580-1897. To read more about this home, click here.

| Update
on New Businesses to Pleasure Island |
|
In June 2009, the Alabama Gulf Coast expanded its culinary palette with the
addition of Café Nola on 2nd Street in Gulf Shores. Specializing
in authentic New Orleans cuisine, this restaurant features an expansive menu,
including Cajun pistols, seafood and poboys. Open for lunch and dinner, this
business will also have live entertainment. For more information, call Café Nola at 251-967-2200.
Editor's Note: Completion
of the new fishing pier at the Gulf State Park is expected late summer or early
fall. Construction has been slightly delayed due to weather and surf conditions.
Once finished, this pier will be one of the longest in the Gulf of Mexico and
will be featured in an upcoming edition of this newsletter.
