Celebrate Opening of Longest Gulf Pier |
|
Spanning more than a fourth of a mile over the gulf waters, the longest
fishing pier in the Gulf of Mexico is now open to the public and is located in
the Alabama Gulf State Park. Exceeding its predecessor’s dimensions, this new structure
– which rises 20 feet above the water - is 1,512 feet long and 20 feet wide.
The pier is located approximately 300 feet east of the previous structure and
features a concession area with restrooms, picnic tables, a snack bar and a tackle
shop. At the middle of the structure are more restrooms and a saltwater in-take
system for the Marine Resource Division. The pier’s end is a 65-foot octagon
that extends over the second sandbar, where big fish like cobia, king mackerel
and tarpon live. The project also includes a new parking lot.
The daily
rate is $8.00 for adults and children age 12 and over while children age 11 and
under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Meanwhile, other prices are $40.00
for a weekly pass, $80.00 for a monthly pass, $160.00 for a semi-annual pass,
and $320.00 for an annual pass. Sightseers will pay $3.00 per day.
This
pier is one of several new items at the Gulf State Park. In 2006, park guests
saw the addition of more lakeside cabins and the opening on a new beach pavilion.
