Tunes to Honor Legendary Night Watchman

“Now, you boys don’t have to be like that. What would yo’ mamma say?” These echoing words would bellow out of the otherwise soften spoken night watchman of the Flora-Bama. Frank Brown departed the world in 1988, only four years after retiring at the age of 91. However, his legend lives on through the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival. Spanning a two week stretch in mid November (the 12th - 22nd), this gathering honors the music and writers that Brown enjoyed so much. This year, the festival will celebrate its silver anniversary.

Writers of all genres and levels of success come together for this annual event. Participating venues are scattered along the Alabama Gulf Coast from Magnolia Springs westward to Pensacola. In its 25 years, this festival’s primary goal has been to pay homage to Brown, who was respected by regulars.

Donning a pair of matching revolvers, he worked the legendary bar and nighttime hangout for an amazing 28 years. Tell your readers about the memory and music of a man who was once featured on Paul Harvey’s syndicated radio show “The Rest of the Story.”

Score a New Story Angle

In a few short years, the Pleasure Island community has seen the thriving popularity of families who travel to compete or to watch their fathers, mothers, sons and daughters compete in organized athletic events. This niche market within the tourism industry blossomed into the 2007 creation of the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, which works to bring quality athletic events to the area. Recently, the commission has seen stellar success in spite of the economic forecasts. Here are links to a few press releases detailing this success:
