Throw Me Somethin' Mister!

Mid-winter blahs got you down? The Alabama Gulf Coast can cure what ails you with an island-style Mardi Gras perfect for your family. An alternative to the chaos and crowds found in New Orleans and Mobile, our coast offers a unique perspective on this nearly 300-year-old tradition.

For two weeks prior to Mardi Gras Day (also known as Fat Tuesday) on February 16, Alabama’s coast revels in the parties, balls, and street parades that have earned this celebration its claim as “the greatest free show on Earth.” But to catch the most local action, you’ll want to be here February 12-16 and participate in the big day.

Thousands of locals, snowbirds, and children line the parade routes to catch moon pies, beads, doubloons, cups, candy, and toys. And don’t miss the area’s only carnival season boat parade, winding its way along the Intracoastal Waterway to commemorate Lulu’s 6th anniversary.

If you’ve never experienced Mardi Gras, it’s an occasion to attend at least once in your lifetime. But this is no time for dallying. Accommodations are filling up quickly, and our availability page lists some great last-minute vacancies that are just a click away…

Love is in the Island Air

Shivering under woolen blankets and layers of clothing doesn’t do much to warm the heart, but a midwinter or early spring escape to Alabama’s coast is a surefire way to reset your relationship’s thermostat.

Typically balmy temperatures and sunny skies make this season tops for a romantic getaway. Enjoy biking along paths within Gulf State Park, or lose yourselves to strolls along the beach, Gulf State Park Pier, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, and the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Play a round on one of the island’s championship golf courses highlighted here, or participate in the Sweetheart Run, a waterfront race held Valentine’s Day weekend.

Historic landmarks provide a glimpse into the romance of the past, while foodies can wine and dine, exploring culinary offerings that range from haute to hometown. You can even bond with your sugar during a recreational class in culinary arts and learn to prepare Valentine cakes, fresh pasta, or flambé.

It’s the perfect time to plan a special getaway. You’ll find great rates, packages, and special deals right on our site. And the Packages and Deals section always has a surprise or two.

Twist and Shout

With the holidays over and routine restored, cabin fever can hit hard right about now. Instead of watching the world go by from your window, come join our party! The Alabama Gulf Coast supports a thriving artistic and theatrical community, with appealing entertainment options for those with laid-back, eclectic, and more refined tastes.

For music lovers, a natural place to start is The Wharf at Orange Beach, where big-name acts like Rascal Flatts and Tim McGraw play to sold-out crowds. And smaller venues featuring local and regional musicians dot the island, whether your tastes skew toward country, rock, blues, acoustic, or reggae.

For the best in traditional and nostalgic performances, look no further than the Gulf Shores Civic Center. Its winter entertainment series presents such classics as the Bay Street Brassworks, Ed Asner in “FDR,” Roy Clark, and The Four Freshman. You can even catch the Glenn Miller Orchestra at the nearby National Museum of Naval Aviation.

Thespians, take heart. The South Baldwin Community Theatre hosts performances throughout the season, including “Moon Over Buffalo” and Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap.”
